Letter from the Director:
The Alaska Statewide High School Science Symposium (ASHSSS) is a hands-on/minds-on
research, writing and oral intensive opportunity for you as secondary
high school students of grades 9-12. It is a University of Alaska (UAF)
outreach program in support and celebration of secondary students conducting
original scientific research, and usually with the guidance of a mentor,
but normally performed outside normal classroom settings. Over 150 volunteers
make this program happen for you. Many local, state and national businesses,
firms, agencies and the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, in addition to
UAF with its commitment to excellence and outreach, contribute to insure
that the ASHSSS takes each year.
Students who complete experimental research projects write a formal
scientific paper based on their research and submit their paper with
their application to the ASHSSS. Written papers are due the first Friday
in February. Submitted papers are reviewed and edited by scientists and
returned. Students whose papers are accepted for competition then present
the results of their work orally at the symposium in a manner similar
to that of a scientist presenting their work at a conference of their
peers. The symposium is held at the UAF during the first weekend in March.
Student researchers who present their work at the symposium may also
enroll in Chem. 190P, a two semester credit course. They compete further
for cash awards, scholarships, and the opportunity to advance to the
National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (NJSHS). If successful
there, they go on to compete in the London International Forum with all
expenses paid for the latter two events.
Now entering into its third decade of serving young people statewide,
I challenge you to take full advantage of all that our program
offers. Contact us for further information on how you can participate.
Yours in Science,
Gary A. Laursen, Ph.D.
